New Maternity and Paediatric Ward Opens in South Sudan

We are proud to announce our partnership with the MacLeod family, has completed its first international hospital project, and the Richard Welch Ward in the Maternity and Paediatrics Hospital in South Sudan is now open. The partnership with home and Kiwis for South Sudan, has helped see the vision of the MacLeod family realised.

With an extra 21 beds available the hospital, which is run by In Deed and Truth Ministries (IDAT), has more than doubled their previous capacity and is now able to help many more women and children in a country that has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.

The new ward was opened by Dr Riak Gai Kok, the Minister of Health for South Sudan, and is named after fellow Kiwi and volunteer Richard Welch, who sadly passed away in the early stages of the build.

Led by Kiwis for South Sudan and the Macleod family, there were many people who worked tirelessly throughout the build, and their hard work and generosity were inspiring. Buildtech underwrote the construction cost of this project, and supported the team in Sudan working on the build for five months.

We are incredibly proud as an organisation to be able to extend our reach across borders and look forward to being part of more projects like this in the future.

Want to help too?
Work at the hospital is ongoing and fundraising is now underway for a new solar power system, which will allow them to have 24/7 power so they can run lights and medical equipment throughout the night and deal with emergencies better.
